Rockin For Rights

Jamie Parker  MP
Member for Balmain

This is a fantastic initiative to raise awareness about disability vilification. We need to start talking more about these issues, listening to the stories and concerns of people with disabilities and raising awareness about the discrimination they face.

I am particularly interested in improving the educational opportunities of children who have special needs. Last year Greens NSW MPs were crucial in setting up a parliamentary inquiry which recommended a major funding increase for students with special needs. I'll continue to campaign on these important issues and I wish you all the best for this and future events.

“Rockin’ for Rights is a positive and energetic way to raise awareness and promote respect for people with disability, and to encourage the message that vilification against people with disability is unacceptable.”

I recognise the importance of supporting the rights of people with a disability and I commend you for taking action. Music is a great way to raise community awareness.

The Government has recently announced a National Disability Strategy that sets a 10 year plan for all governments to address the barriers faced by Australians with disability and will ensure that mainstream services and programs including healthcare, housing, transport and education, address the needs of people with disability. One of the Priority areas of the Strategy is Rights Protection, Justice and Legislation, which aims to ensure people with disability have their rights promoted, upheld and protected.

I wish you all the best for the event tomorrow night.
